By Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, June 13, 2023. ITS Campus, ITS News - Maritime affairs play a vital role in Indonesia. To maximize the potential of the largest archipelago nation, the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) and the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia officially inaugurated a shipyard in Asmat Regency, South Papua, on Thursday (June 1st).
The event was attended by Dr. Ir. Hj. Tri Rismaharini, MT, Minister of Social Affairs of Indonesia, Bambang Pramujati, ST, MSc, Eng, PhD, Vice Rector IV of ITS, and Dr. Eng. Trika Pitana, ST, MSc, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Technology (FTK) of ITS. A total of 27 long boats named "Bangkits Cenderawasih" were launched in the waters of Agats, Asmat Regency, through the Diocese of Agats.
Head of the Department of Naval Architecture Engineering at ITS, Ir. Wasis Dwi Aryawan, MSc, PhD, revealed that "Bangkits Cenderawasih" was born from the aspirations of the Papua community conveyed to Minister Risma. Wasis stated that the Asmat community hoped for support in terms of transportation to facilitate their predominantly aquatic way of life.
Upon hearing these aspirations, Risma and ITS collaborated to provide boat-making training for the Asmat community. This program has been running since 2022, with participants from Papua being invited to ITS. Wasis emphasized that ITS's role was limited to education and facilitation. "This is done to enable the Asmat community to build and manage their own boats in the future," said the lecturer of Ship Design course.

During the training, the Asmat community was guided and directed by ITS to build long boats using fiberglass material. The fiberglass boats have a length of 9.20 meters, width of 1.75 meters, height of one meter, and the hull is 0.45 meters long. Designed to support the daily activities of the Asmat community, these sea transport vessels have a power equivalent to 40 horsepower.
In addition to boat construction, ITS also guided the Asmat community in establishing a dedicated boat repair facility. This repair facility was established due to the presence of numerous unused and abandoned damaged boats. "Despite their condition, these boats still have great potential for use," added the bespectacled man.
The same sentiment was expressed by Vice Rector IV of ITS, Bambang. He also lamented the underutilized potential of Asmat. Therefore, he fully supports the collaborative program initiated by the Ministry of Social Affairs. "I am proud to see our Papuan brothers and sisters being able to produce their own boats independently," he said.
He continued that the inauguration, coinciding with the Birth of Pancasila Day, received positive responses from the Asmat community and Minister Risma. Through the Bishop, the Asmat community expressed their gratitude to ITS for the realization of this program. "On behalf of ITS, I hope that we can continue to bring benefits and visit other regions," concluded Bambang.
