Jakarta - Entering the month of August, it signifies the retirement of analog TV broadcasting. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) aims to turn off analog TV broadcasts and replace them with digital TV broadcasts.
This decision comes as major cities in the country start to undergo the analog switch off (ASO) process. This includes 11 cities, such as Jabodetabek, Palembang, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, Denpasar, Palembang, Makassar, Banjarmasin, and Medan.
Recently, Medan, one of the major cities, has already turned off its analog TV broadcasts on July 30. Seeing this progress, Kominfo is confident that Indonesia will be free from analog broadcasting before the Indonesian Independence Day.
Geryantika Kurnia, the Director of Broadcasting at the Directorate General of Post and Informatics of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, stated that before ASO, there were around 59 million analog TV viewers. After ASO on July 1, 2023, the penetration of digital TV viewers reached 56 million or 95.2%.
Nationally, the penetration of digital TV viewers before ASO was 121 million, and it is now also claimed to be heading towards normalcy with 124 million viewers or 95.4%.
Regarding the infrastructure, TVRI and private TV stations have built digital broadcasting mux (multiplexer) in 112 broadcasting areas, consisting of 341 regencies/cities affected by ASO. 676 TV stations are already broadcasting digitally, and there are only 10 TV stations that are still analog and are in the process of migration to digital TV.
"With the data available and the support from the broadcasting industry and stakeholders, Indonesia is ready for national ASO, and it is expected that before Indonesia's Independence Day, TV broadcasting will be fully digital as the sweetest gift from the broadcasting industry stakeholders," Gery said some time ago.
Gery revealed that the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) has proposed a declaration of national ASO to coincide with the commemoration of Indonesian Broadcasting Day on August 12, 2023.
"So that Indonesia can be on par with other countries that have migrated to Digital TV," he added. Furthermore, after Indonesia achieves TV analog freedom, one of the benefits that will be felt by the public is faster internet access compared to before.
"With this national ASO, it will have an impact on the equal distribution of high-speed internet (broadband), achieving signal freedom (solving cellular signal blank spots) across Indonesia, which will drive new business opportunities, job creation, and contribute to the growth of the digital economy in Indonesia," he explained.
